On December 7, 1997, Land Rover Scarborough, Maine's only authorized Land Rover dealer, teamed up with East Coast Rover Co. to put on an off road event and clinic for Land Rover owners.
The day started off with the group meeting at the dealership in Scarborough for coffee and a brief meeting. A caravan of over 25 Land-Rovers then headed up the coast to the ECR facility in Warren, Maine.
The staff of ECR Off Road then took the morning to give lectures on everything from transfer case operations and misconceptions, to basic off road driving techniques and trail safety. The ECR staff then gave the group a demonstration of how a Land-Rover's suspension and 4x4 system operates using our RTI (ramp travel index) ramp, and one of ECR Off Road's school Range Rovers.
The group, now 27 Land-Rovers with 72 people, including 3 journalists, and one TV station camera man, headed to a nearby restaurant for a private catered lunch. Once the group had their fill of everything from true New England clam chowder to ceasar's salad, they headed back to ECR's facility, and our 400 acre mountain test track to do some "hands on" instruction on how to use your Land-Rover off road.
The trail consisted of everything from snow and ice, to rocks and water crossings. There was even a wide open section of power line where the staff of ECR Off Road gave another demonstration of just what a modified Land-Rover will do in the hands of one of our instructors.
The group of Rover owner's learned as they drove and ECR's trail guides gave direction at each difficult section.
The group of Land-Rovers consisted of every imaginable type from an early Series IIA 88" Safari Station Wagon and a 101 Forward Control, to Trek Discovery's and Range Rover 4.6 HSE's.
After the trail lesson the group returned to the ECR facility for a quick send off, and some great hand outs from Land-Rover Scarborough. The caravan of Land-Rovers then headed back down the coast to the dealership in Scarborough. Thanks to all who attended the event, and to Land Rover Scarborough for combining their efforts with a vintage Land-Rover organization like East Coast Rover Co. for a great combination. The day was great success, and the staff of ECR welcome other clubs and organizations to come and participate in off road instruction and activities with ECR Off road.
