1994 NAS Defender 90 Soft Top #1112
Upgrades and sorting out
As you can see this 1994 NAS (North American Specification) Defender 90 Soft Top has gone through some pretty big changes over the course of its life. That is one of the great things about Defenders, you can make them into just about anything you want. This truck come to us from CT for some sorting out. It has already been built up somwehere with a galvanized frame and a 300 Tdi conversion and the 90 looks good, but there are a few details to make the truck run and drive correctly that need doing.
The first order of business is to sort out the 3 link suspension. It is a mess of incorrect parts and incorrect set up, but because ECR was the first shop to ever install a 3 link in a Tdi Defender way back when, we can sort this out without hassle.
So out comes the incorrectly made 3 link cross-member so that we can cut it apart and re-make it the right way. Once the welding is done it will go back into the 90 and we will start to dial in the suspension so that the truck can be driven and so that everything works on the RTI ramp.
Now that the 3 link has been sorted out we can address some of the other concerns. The brakes on the 90 were terrible due to a bad vacuum pump and a bad brake booster, so we replaced those items to get the 90s brakes up to snuff.
Inside the 90 we completed a few work order than the customer wanted that included wiring up the rear defroster with the correct timer and a nice factory looking switch. We even wired the system into a factory relay and fuse in the fuse box area and installed the correct illumination warning on the dash binnacle. It all adds up to a nice factory look to that system for this soft top turned wagon.
This image shows the 90 after some road tests, all cleaned up and ready to head back to CT. We've done the work orders the customer requested and also made some suggestions for future work so that the project can stay on track as the owner makes everything just the way he wants things to be. Restoration or just suspension sorting, we'll do as much or as little as you like.
